For most of the past 5,000 years, the primary focus in manufacturing and distribution has been to receive products from your suppliers, transform them into products, and to ship those products to customers.
But all that has been changing over the past decade or so, with widespread adoption of EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) for commercial data exchange and now the global adoption of GS1 (Global Standards One) standards for barcode labeling and data exchange, especially as it relates to supply chain materials traceability.
As a result, capturing accurate data when receiving, transformation, packing, and shipping events occur has now become a vital role for manufacturing and distribution operations people and also, unfortunately, has become a major source of errors in data exchange with supply chain partners.
In this paper, the authors examine major sources of error as well as how to detect and correct these.
